The Game of Throne actress has been speaking out on the big screen part
Forget the return of Harrison Ford or Adam Driver’s rumoured villain, the casting for Star Wars: Episode VII we’re most excited for is Gwendoline Christie. With no official word yet on exactly who the Game of Thrones favourite will be playing, some very interesting new rumours have been doing the rounds.
Plot leaks for JJ Abrams’ hugely secretive movie have been coming thick and fast over the past couple of weeks. Badass Digest recently claimed Brit up and comers John Boyega and Daisy Ridley are playing the leads in the new chapter, with the pair on a quest to find Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker, who has been MIA since the events of Return of the Jedi.
A fresh rumour from the site though puts Gwendoline as an Imperial officer or even a Sith, trying to hunt down Boyega’s Stormtrooper after he sets off on his mission.
The fact that Gwendoline has allegedly been spotted training with a lightsaber points to a possible Sith role (those sword-fighting skills on GoT should come in handy if this is the case).
Even more interestingly though, the site claims Christie’s part is thought to have been gender swapped during re-drafts of the script, with none other than Benedict Cumberbatch originally linked to the part.
Benedict shot down rumours he’s teaming up with his Star Trek: Into Darkness director Abrams again for Star Wars at Oz Comic Con back in April.
According to the entertainment site The Iris, which was live-tweeting from the event, Benedict told the audience “I would’ve liked a part in JJ’s [Abrams] new Star Wars but it won’t happen sadly.”
While this is all a lot of speculation, Gwendoline did tease her big screen adventure at Comic Con over the weekend, telling fans that she feels “incredibly lucky” to land the role.
“That was a real, real dream come true,” she told Access Hollywood. “That was like nothing you ever imagined. It’s so burnt into our minds. It’s burnt into my mind. I was shown those movies when I was a tiny little girl and then, to be a part of that thing that you held in such high regard, that’s been your escapism and your love and your entertainment and it’s been not just yours but everyone around you, I’m incredibly lucky. And it’s a lot of fun.”
While we don’t know for sure yet who Gwen will be playing, she teased that her character won’t stray too far from the action woman style of her GoT role: “Brienne of Tarth may well continue to kick ass,” she revealed.
Personally I think this sounds like a rumor but who knows?
