Gwendoline Christie Joins Sci-Fi Thriller ‘Darkest Minds’

THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER – Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie is in negotiations to join the cast of Darkest Minds, Fox’s adaptation of the YA trilogy by Alexandra Bracken.

Amandla Stenberg is toplining the project, which also has Mandy Moore, as well as a host of young up-and-comers, on the call sheet.

Jennifer Yuh Nelson, best known for helming the Kung Fu Panda movies, is making her live-action directorial debut with the teen sci-fi project that is being produced by Shawn Levy and his 21 Laps banner.

Set in an America where a pandemic has killed most of the children and teenagers, the story tells of teens with superpowers who are taken from their families and placed inside internment camps.

Stenberg is playing Ruby Daly, a 16-year-old with telekinetic powers who escapes her camp and joins a group of teens on the run from the government.

Christie will play a bounty hunter of fugitive teens who takes immense pleasure in her vicious job.

The actress is best known for playing the noble warrior Brienne of Tarth on HBO’s Thrones. She also plays the enigmatic Captain Phasma in the new Star Wars movies, a role she reprises in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which is set to open Dec. 15.

Christie is repped by WME and the U.K.’s Independent Talent Group.

‘Games of Thrones’ Star Joining Elisabeth Moss in ‘Top of the Lake’ Season 2

THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER – Confirming a year of talk and speculation, Elisabeth Moss is officially on board for a second season of Jane Campion’s celebrated Top of the Lake — dubbed Top of the Lake 2: China Girl. Joining the returning star will be Game of Thrones and Star Wars: The Force Awakens actress Gwendoline Christie.

“I’m so excited to be back in Australia working with Jane on exploring this wonderful character,” Moss said Monday in a statement on reprising the role of detective Robin Griffin. “I can’t wait for audiences to see where we take Robin’s journey.”

The second season moves the action from New Zealand to Australia, picking up four years after the events of the first season when the unidentified body of an Asian girl washes up on to Sydney’s Bondi Beach. The case seems hopeless until Robin discovers that she was not the only victim.

Top of the Lake premiered in 2013 to much critical acclaim (and a Golden Globe win and Emmy nomination for Moss), but it was billed as a limited series — something echoed by the creative team. A second season was announced in 2014, but there was little word from writer-director Campion and co-scribe Gerard Lee on what (and who) it might entail.

See-Saw Films will again produce the project for BBC Two in co-production with SundanceTV in the U.S. Top of the Lake 2: China Girl is slated to premiere in 2017, with Campion again on board to write with Lee and direct with new co-director Ariel Kleiman.

“I am so delighted to be working on Top of the Lake 2,” added Christie. “Jane Campion has been a major creative influence throughout my life and I could not feel more privileged to be working on the next installment of her unique and enthralling drama, alongside the brilliant Elisabeth Moss.”

Saturn Award Nominations!

While Gwendoline didn’t receive an individual nomination, her multiple projects, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Game of Thrones, and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay 2, received quite a few nominations!

VARIETY – “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” leads this year’s Saturn Awards nominations with 15. Its next closest competitors, “Mad Max: Fury Road” and “Crimson Peak,” are far behind with nine noms each.

Box office smash “Jurassic World” followed with seven nominations. The Marvel films “Ant-Man” and “Avengers: Age of Ultron” were up next, bringing in six and four nominations, respectively.

On the TV side, AMC stalwart “The Walking Dead” shambled off with seven nominations, while HBO’s “Game of Thrones” netted five. There was a four-way tie among “Daredevil,” “Hannibal,” “Supergirl” and “Wayward Pines,” each with four nominations.

The Saturn Awards — now in their 42nd year — are presented annually to films and television series by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films.

The award show is known for its eclectic groupings of films in unique categories. In the best action/adventure film category, Oscar favorite “The Revenant” will compete against Tom Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” and the Melissa McCarthy comedy “Spy.” Meanwhile, “Kingsman: The Secret Service” leading man Taron Egerton will square off against Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio for best actor.

This year’s Saturn Awards are adding a new category: best new-media television. The nominees include Netflix’s “Daredevil,” “Jessica Jones” and “Sense8”; Amazon’s “The Man in the High Castle” and “Bosch”; and PlayStation/Crackle’s “Powers.”

The award ceremony will take place in June in Burbank.
