EW – The seventh season of Game of Thrones may see Brienne of Tarth’s loyalty shift — to herself.
During an interview at EW’s video lounge at Comic-Con International in San Diego on Friday, actress Gwendoline Christie teased what’s ahead for her character now that Brienne has fulfilled her oath to rescue Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner).
“As we see Brienne back at Winterfell, we see that she’s with Sansa, she’s there in place, and it feels like she’s going towards consolidating her oath,” Christie said. “What I think we’ll see throughout the season is actually Brienne starting to question what received authority is and take on more of an independent decision-making process.”
That might mean that she starts to question her allegiances. “I think we’ve seen Brienne being an incredibly honorable character, but one who has operated from a received sense of what honor is,” Christie added. “And now in the world, it’s not at all as she expected, and no one’s clear as to whether they’re good or evil. And that gray area means that there’s an increased decision-making process that happens moment to moment.”
It was a big Friday for Christie and the Thrones cast, as they also participated in a packed panel in Hall H of the San Diego Convention Center. There, the Brienne actress discussed her character’s reaction to the flirtatious Tormund.
“I don’t think at the foremost of her consciousness is a value system based on how men appreciate her,” she said of Tormund’s advances. “But who doesn’t like being appreciated as both, really? But I don’t think that’s what she’s invested in. She’s finding it awkward. But underneath any awkwardness is potential secret enjoyment.” But, she added, “I think to win Brienne’s heart is about mutual respect about your skill and your ideals, not about overpowering of sexual advance.”
Christie was joined in EW’s suite by her Thrones costars Isaac Hempstead Wright (Bran Stark), Liam Cunningham (Davos Seaworth), and John Bradley (Sam Tarley), the latter of whom broke down his character’s gag-inducing montage in Sunday’s season premiere. The Game of Thrones star’s entire outfit was a statement.
VANITY FAIR – When the stars descended on the SAG red carpet Sunday night, they did so in the shadow of massive nation-wide protests in reaction to the executive order banning people from certain countries from entering the U.S. It can be a surreal experience watching the actors talk about their projects inside a bubble that ignores incendiary headlines. Some performers, like Riz Ahmed and John Legend—who have both certainly been vocally political elsewhere—chose to keep the S.A.G. red carpet politics-free. “I’m not saving the world tonight,” Viola Davis told E! host Giuliana Rancic. But by striding down the red carpet in a shimmering, black, Vivienne Westwood jumpsuit, Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie was making a statement of her own citing Westwood’s “activist mindset” as the reason for their enduring partnership.
This isn’t the first time Christie has used that exact phrase. When she became the face of Westwood’s “Unisex” campaign in 2015, Christie said: “It is so relevant for Vivienne Westwood to re-assert their activist mind-set and create a collection that takes us beyond our current gender stereotypes with beauty and intelligence.” And while other women on the red carpet also wore accessories and even pants to make a statement, Christie’s fashion statement was the most eye-popping.
It’s the actress’s second major political statement this month: she tweeted in solidarity with the Women’s March. . .

And though she’s yet to use her social media to comment directly on the recent executive order, she retweeted a Desmond Tutu quote from Forest Whitaker urging unity over division. And Christie is every bit aware what kind of example her Game of Thrones character, Brienne of Tarth, sets in terms of breaking down the limits of gendered expectations. Usually she gets to do that good work in shining armor, but Sunday night she did it in shimmering sequins.
EW – The Rogue One: A Star Wars Story panel at Friday’s Star Wars Celebration in London opened with the tribute to those killed on Thursday in Nice, France during an attack on Bastille Day.
Before revealing new footage from the first Star Wars standalone film, actress Gwendoline Christie – who appeared in last year’s The Force Awakens – led the crowd in a moment of silence.
“I’d like to just take a moment… it’s impossible for us to sit here today at Celebration, particularly at an event called Celebration, without thinking about the terrible events that have happened not far from here. On behalf of everyone, our hearts go out to the people of Nice and France,” she said as the crowd cheered. “I’d like us all to just take a moment to send our heartfelt thoughts and prayers.”
Following the moment of silence, someone in the crowd began singing “La Marseillais,” the French national anthem, in a show of solidarity. An emotional Christie clapped along as the crowd sang.
On Thursday in Nice, a terrorist attack left at least 84 dead and more than 200 injured, when a truck struck civilians following a celebration of Bastille Day.
