Press/Video: Comic Con – Gwendoline Christie teases what’s ahead for Brienne

EW – The seventh season of Game of Thrones may see Brienne of Tarth’s loyalty shift — to herself.

During an interview at EW’s video lounge at Comic-Con International in San Diego on Friday, actress Gwendoline Christie teased what’s ahead for her character now that Brienne has fulfilled her oath to rescue Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner).

“As we see Brienne back at Winterfell, we see that she’s with Sansa, she’s there in place, and it feels like she’s going towards consolidating her oath,” Christie said. “What I think we’ll see throughout the season is actually Brienne starting to question what received authority is and take on more of an independent decision-making process.”

That might mean that she starts to question her allegiances. “I think we’ve seen Brienne being an incredibly honorable character, but one who has operated from a received sense of what honor is,” Christie added. “And now in the world, it’s not at all as she expected, and no one’s clear as to whether they’re good or evil. And that gray area means that there’s an increased decision-making process that happens moment to moment.”

It was a big Friday for Christie and the Thrones cast, as they also participated in a packed panel in Hall H of the San Diego Convention Center. There, the Brienne actress discussed her character’s reaction to the flirtatious Tormund.

“I don’t think at the foremost of her consciousness is a value system based on how men appreciate her,” she said of Tormund’s advances. “But who doesn’t like being appreciated as both, really? But I don’t think that’s what she’s invested in. She’s finding it awkward. But underneath any awkwardness is potential secret enjoyment.” But, she added, “I think to win Brienne’s heart is about mutual respect about your skill and your ideals, not about overpowering of sexual advance.”

Christie was joined in EW’s suite by her Thrones costars Isaac Hempstead Wright (Bran Stark), Liam Cunningham (Davos Seaworth), and John Bradley (Sam Tarley), the latter of whom broke down his character’s gag-inducing montage in Sunday’s season premiere. Watch the full interview in the video above, and click here to hear Sophie Turner’s take on the Sansa Stark-Jon Snow rivalry.

Game of Thrones airs Sundays on HBO.

Game of Thrones star and designer will be part of fashion extravaganza at Port Eliot Festival

GAME of Thrones enthusiasts will be delighted to learn that Brienne of Tarth, alias actress Gwendoline Christie, is coming to Cornwall this summer.

Port Eliot Festival at St Germans will see a mass-migration of fashion talent to the ancient walled garden on the estate. There they will set up The Wardrobe Department, where festivalgoers of all ages will find themselves getting creative with the most inventive brains in British fashion and being transformed with wild hair and makeup, courtesy of Bumble and bumble and MAC.

Sarah Mower, the British Fashion Council’s Ambassador for Emerging Talent, describes the heady treats she and her band of co-conspirators are whipping up:

“The entertainments begin with our obsession with the epic fantasy-mediaevalist Game of Thrones, HBO’s gripping depiction of dynastic struggles, dread fears and human foibles. Three great women will be journeying to Port Eliot to speak to us of life in Westeros. Actress Gwendoline Christie will talk about how she brilliantly inhabits Brienne of Tarth, loyal knight and feminist heroine. Thrones’ original production designer Gemma Jackson will reveal how she visualised and built all Seven Kingdoms. Costume designer Michele Clapton will discuss how she clothes everyone, from the courts of incestuous queens, the denizens of brothels and religious fanatics, to the armour, furs and rags of warring armies.

Denver Comic Con 2015: Gwendoline Christie

gwendolyn-christie

You’ll not be getting much from Gwendoline about Commander Lyme in ‘The Hunger Games’ or her mysterious helmeted character in ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens‘, but she loves to talk about her character on Brienne of Tarth on ‘Game of Thrones.’

Christie began her panel at Denver Comic Con by explaining her journey to becoming Brienne of Tarth, which all started with googling herself. A friend had told her that she was up for an HBO show, or rather, the internet said she was. From there, she found the fan forums, picked up the books and fell in love with a character that “explodes” all the feminine stereotypes.

To her, what is brilliant about the character is that she uses her “own strength, and her own power” to abide by a moral code that does not align to a particular house.

Pranking Alfie, strong women, and more in GOT panel at Comikaze Expo

Clipboard01

Stan Lee’s Comikaze Expo took place this weekend in Los Angeles, and included a Game of Thrones panel with actors Gwendoline Christie, Alfie Allen and Esme Bianco. (Well, two of them are still on the show, Esme’s Ros was killed off rather spectacularly in Season 3.) Adrienne Curry moderated.

got002

Alfie’s told a story of a prank from Season 2:

“I got a fake script at the end of the second season telling me that I was going to die. They left me for about four weeks tearing my hair out and then they decided to tell me.”

I mean, if you haven’t read ahead in the books as an actor on the show, that’s a pretty easy prank to pull. (For the record, I do understand why actors don’t want to read ahead, because it will affect their performance if they know what’s coming. But still.)

gwen2

Gwendoline talked about the portrayal of women in the show, and the perceived sexism that’s inherent in the story.

“I am very aware that gender inequality is still very alive in our world. However, the female characters in ‘Game of Thrones’ are some of the strongest female characters we have seen in recent times on television. I applaud that. I’m very passionate about the way women are portrayed, and I am very proud of the work that is continuing to be done by this television show in mainstream media. It may be small steps but I am very grateful they are being taken.”
