‘Game of Thrones’ director was surprised by fan reactions to this brief character interaction

TECH INSIDER: Warning: Spoilers ahead for “Game of Thrones” season six.

Sunday’s “Game of Thrones” episode had a strong theme of familial reunion — Jon and Sansa were brought together, while Margaery and Loras spoke for the first time since their imprisonment and Theon returned home to Yara.

But there was one onscreen duo people online couldn’t stop talking about: Tormund Giantsbane and Brienne of Tarth. The wildling leader was making eyes at Brienne over his mutton, and this small moment was one of fans’ biggest takeaways of the night.

Tech Insider caught up with director Dan Sackheim, the man behind the camera for season six episodes three and four, “Oathbreaker” and “The Book of the Stranger.” Naturally, we asked him what he thought about viewer’s “shipping” Tormund and Brienne.

“Honestly, I’m surprised anyone even noticed,” Sackheim told TI. “I mean it was meant to be a little grace note, and the fact that it’s blown up with the buzz it has on the internet and on the blogosphere is kind of shocking to me.”

I’m totally shipping Tormund/Brienne now. Anyone else?!? Ha! Last night’s episode of Game of Thrones was amazing. Melisandre looked afraid of Brienne when she boldly told her that she killed Stannis yet Tormund was completely impressed by her. That’s going to be an interesting party headed to Winterfell assuming Ser Davos and Melisandre joins Brienne, Sansa, and Jon.

Daisy Ridley and Gwendoline Christie talk a galaxy far, far away with GT

GAY TIMES – It’s one of the most important dates in every fan’s diary, May the 4th, Star Wars day.

To celebrate this most auspicious of occasions, we thought it would be a good idea to venture into the GT archives and dig out our interview with the amazing Daisy Ridley [Rey] and Gwendoline Christie [Captain Phasma].

We caught up with them a long time ago… Well, only a month or two before the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and as you can tell, both were determined to stay tight lipped about any plot details.

We could threaten to blow up their home planets or beguile them with Jedi mind tricks, but the force for keeping secrets is strong in these two. “All I can tell you about Star Wars is that it’s a space adventure,” Daisy deadpans. “Just saying. Actually, didn’t they say it’s a space western? That’s the actual genre, I think.”

Indeed it is, but we could’ve told her that. Pretty much everything else about the most eagerly awaited franchise reboot since George Lucas announced he was making three prequels to the original trilogy is under wraps. Thanks to Jar Jar Binks and The Phantom Menace’s kid-movie sensibility, Lucas left many of us disappointed – although he sort of redeemed himself as Attack of the Clones went dark and Revenge of the Sith went even darker. And the trailers for The Force Awakens, which has sci-fi titan JJ Abrams at the helm and the almighty Ford-Fisher-Hamill triumvirate back on board, are freaking awesome.

The action figures are out there now too and we’ve glimpsed some of the costumes, but just what awakens the Force is a mystery that Daisy (probably the luckiest girl alive since it’s the 23-year-old’s first movie after her scenes were cut from The Inbetweeners 2) hopes will remain until the 20th Century Fox fanfare blares out on opening day and Abrams whisks us back to a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. “The reason everyone is keeping it secret is for the best reason possible – so that when everyone goes to see it in the cinema they won’t know what to expect,” she says. “There’s going to be droids and there’s going to be creatures.” Which isn’t exactly a spoiler, Daisy. She laughs. “But the emotional story will be a surprise.”

It’s also a surprise for the young actress, and a pleasant one at that, to learn that the franchise has a legion of gay fans. “When I went to the Disney Store I was surprised by how many gay men I ran into,” she smiles, looking very much like a young Keira Knightley minus the pout.

5 Reasons Brienne of Tarth Is the True Hero on Game of Thrones

brienne-of-tarth

POP SUGAR – When asked about the hero on Game of Thrones, many people might respond “Do you mean Jon Snow?” or “That Jaime Lannister is such a babe.” In truth, however, the real hero of the story is Brienne of Tarth, beautifully played on the HBO series by Gwendoline Christie.

If you’re thinking, “What? But she hasn’t even won any huge battles, let alone ridden a dragon!” allow us to convince you. With an honorable nature that rivals Ned Stark’s, a sense of loyalty that reveals her true Hufflepuff temperament, and a badass fighting style, here are five reasons Brienne is the best character on Game of Thrones.

1.) She turns sexism and attempted humiliation into victory: In both the books and TV show, Brienne uses others’ shoddy treatment of women to her advantage on the battlefield. Oftentimes, male fighters underestimate Brienne because of her sex, allowing her to swiftly and skillfully gain the upper hand. Other men exert their energy all at once in an attempt to defeat her quickly — their pride encourages them to prove that men are better fighters than women — allowing Brienne to showcase endurance, strength, and discipline by outlasting them in battle.
